The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to include murder.
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
The stabbing happened outside Bullring retail complex, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Police said they classified it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response after completing her shift at about 22:00 Friday night.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our security is compromised essentially, in the downtown area."
Another individual, 25, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting the city quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's terrible."
