Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
